Martin Nel

Martin Nel is Executive Vice President & Chief Risk Officer. In his role, he is accountable for MCAP’s enterprise-wide risk management programs, focusing on creating risk alignment within all lines of business. With over two decades of experience in financial services in Canada and Europe, Martin has a wealth of knowledge and experience in risk management, data and analytics and leading successful banking operations. Prior to joining MCAP, Martin spent over ten years as a senior executive at BMO, leading their personal and small business banking line of business. In this role, from 2009 to 2012, when BMO held an equity stake in MCAP Service Corporation, he served as a member of the board of MCAP Mortgage Corporation and then as the Chair. Over his career, he has also held advisory positions with regulatory bodies such as the CMHC and First Canadian Title. Prior to working for BMO Martin spent seven years with McKinsey & Co in France, serving financial institutions across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Most recently Martin worked as Chief Commercial Officer for Smart Data Foundry, a subsidiary of the University of Edinburgh, specialising in deriving insights from large private sector financial datasets. Martin has a Bachelor of Commerce and Honours Accounting degree from Stellenbosch University (South Africa). As a Rhodes Scholar, he also obtained an Honours degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University.
