We are going through unprecedented times. Although we may be practicing social and physical distancing, we are still able to give back to our communities. Here are three ways to volunteer during a pandemic:
Kids Help Phone
Now, more than ever, young people across Canada are looking for support. Although we are physically apart, we can let them know help isn’t far. Kids Help Phone is an e-mental health service providing 24/7 confidential professional online and telephone counselling, and volunteer-led, text-based support. Volunteer Crisis Responders are trained to support those in need with active listening and collaborative problem-solving. Click here for more information.
Online Fundraisers
Charities across Canada have pivoted or paused their annual fundraisers due to COVID-19. There are many ways to fundraise to keep the programs at your charity of choice running. Organizing an online fundraiser is a great way to build engagement with your friends and family, while keeping a distance. Here are some fun online fundraising ideas:
Talent Show Reach out to your community and organize a talent show through video conferencing. Attendees are encouraged to donate to the charity of choice. We recommend setting a recommended minimum donation for all attendees. For example, $5 per person or $10 per family. |
|
Art for a Cause Offer to do custom artwork by donation! Children’s artwork is great too. |
|
Game Tournament Host a tournament with online games. Participants will be asked to donate a set amount as an entry fee. Are you normally part of a hockey league? Reach out to your teammates for an online hockey tournament! |
Local Food Banks
Food banks across Canada have now implemented further safety features to protect their volunteers and those they support. Many have moved away from distributing food hampers from community centers and churches to makeshift distribution centers that will allow physical distancing. Food banks are looking for volunteers to help sort and package donations. They are also accepting food donations; visit your local food bank’s website to see what items are needed most.
Stay Safe While Volunteering
Here are some tips on how to stay safe while volunteering:
If possible, avoid travelling by public transportation. | Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you. | Bring your own snack, meal and water. |
Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently. | Be sure to keep a 2 meters distance between you and others. | Speak up if you notice any gaps in safety for you and those you’re helping. |
